¡No olvidéis traerlas!
Why does a long boat float on the water but a small stone sink?
When you place an object in water, the force of gravity pushes the object to the bottom, but another force pushes the object upwards. We call this force bouyancy.
Whether an object sinks or floats in a liquid depends on the MATERIAL it is made of.
If an object is light for its size, it floats. These objects have a LOW DENSITY of matter.
If an object is heavy for its size, it sinks. These objects have a HIGH DENSITY of matter.
Some objects are light for their size because they contain AIR. Large ships weigh a lot, but because their hull is hollow they are light for their size and have a low density.
Watch the videos below to understand it in a better way:
Last week we started our new Project about matter and materials. During this term we are going to learn lots of things about it.
For homework, you had to create a poster about the three states of matter. They are SOLID, LIQUID AND GAS.
Here you can watch some videos about it:
The characteristics of these three groups are:
SOLIDS have a fixed shape and size. They cannot flow because their particles cannot move from place to place. Their particles are close together.
LIQUIDS have a definite size but they can have a different shape depending on the container they fill. They can flow and take the shape of the container because their particles can move around each other.
GASES have a no definite size or shape. It means their particles can move quickly in all directions. They can flow and completely fill their container.
Hope you know now more information about the three main states of matter...but, do you know there are other states? What are they? INVESTIGATE ABOUT IT ;)
